The official announcement is scheduled to be released today, but the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting already that Georgia baseball coach David Perno has been dismissed. The Atlanta daily says athletic director Greg McGarity informed Perno Sunday that he won't be back for the final year of his contract, which would have paid Perno $450,000 next season. Perno led the Bulldogs to the College World Series three times, including the 2008 championship game. He was also a player on the 1990 team and was an assistant coach on the 2001 team, both of which made the CWS.

Perry High School has hired Turner County head coach Eric Soliday to take over the Panthers program after Stacy Harden's firing last month. The Houston County school board approved the hire yesterday. Soliday has coached at the high school level for 24 seasons, most of them at Turner County, where he has been the head coach on two occasions. He began his career there in 1989, and left after eight seasons for a 2-year stay at Henry County. He landed the job at Americus in 1999, and stayed there through 2003, when Americus and Sumter County systems merged. He returned to Turner County in 2004, and just completed his ninth year, 17th overall, at the Ashburn school. Soliday has a career record of 166-109-2. Fifty seven of the wins came during five years at Americus.

Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman said yesterday that the school has no intention of granting five-star linebacker Matthew Thomas a release from the letter of intent he signed in February. The prized recruit from Miami has asked for his release, and wants to play either at Georgia or USC. Spetman said in his news release that the school would be happy to release a player if there is a compelling reason, but saw none in Thomas' request. He said that FSU must 'uphold the integrity of the LOI process'. The AJC, in reporting the story today, responded that it appears hypocritical of the NCAA to hinder a player transfer when coaches and ADs can move freely without penalty.

Georgia Tech wide receiver Anthony Autry will miss the 2013 season after re-injuring a knee. Autry, a true freshman last season, tore the ACL last season, was not in training or rehabilition when the most recent setback occurred. University of Georgia students could find themselves losing more of their football seats if they don't start coming to the games. The announcement came yesterday from the school's sports information department. The new yourg alums program, instituted for the coming football sleason, offered those who graduated from UFA within the past five years the opportunity to request renewable season tickets for football without having to make the usual mandatory donation. The seats already taken away were described as 'frequently unused' by students, who occupy a designated part of Sanford Stadium with use of their student Ids. There are 16,000 seats, but beginning with the 2013 season, 2,000 have been taken away from students.

Georgia, and several other schools, apparently have lost out in recruiting efforts surrounding Calvary Day School tight end Milan Richard, who is the nephew of former UGA great and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker. After turning down an earlier offer from Georgia to follow his famous uncle to Athens, Richard chose Clemson over Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. At the time Georgia made an offer, Richard said he was not ready to commit, even though he knew that the Bulldogs would sign just one tight end and the opportunity probably wouldn't be there later. Richard is the second highly regarded prospect from the state to commit to Clemson, following Gainesville quarterback Deshaun Watson. Richard's mother is Herschel Walker's sister.

Georgia Tech place kicker Justin Moore has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules. In making the announcement, a Tech spokesman, without identifying the violations, stated that it is not a legal matter. Inconsistency on field goal attempts cost Moore the starting job to David Scully last season, and Moore ended up attempting just four field goals, making two. In 2011, although Moore was consistent on PAT's, setting single season school and ACC records with 56 straight attempts without a miss, he converted just 11-of-17 field goal attempts. With Moore's departure, incoming freshman Harrison Bukler of Westminster will compete with Scully for the starting job.

A Kentucky football player from Cleveland in White County reportedly is showing improvement after being seriously injured in a car wreck early Saturday morning near his home. 20-year old Ashley Lowery started eight games for the Wildcats last season at safety, finishing fifth on the team in tackles with 43. According to a state patrol report on the accident, Lowery's 2006 Nissan Altima ran off Town Creek Road near Cleveland around 4:00am and overturned several times. Lowery was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown about 100 feet from the car.
