A Seattle group, which recently reached an agreement to purchase the Sacramento Kings, has formally filed for relocation, according to a statement released yesterday by commissioner David Stern. The commissioner said the new owners want to move the franchise to Seattle for the 2013-14 season, and reportedly will restore the SuperSonics name. An effort by Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson to find investors for the team that would match the sale price and keep it in place has apparently failed. The Seattle group is reportedly paying a record $525 million for the franchise, surpassing the previous record of $450 the Golden State Warriors sold for in 2010. Seattle lost its previous franchise following lteh 2007-08 season when the teal moved to Oklahoma City.

Maya Moore's Olympic ring, stolen from her Cobb County residence last fall, was sold at a Gold Rush jeweler in Cumberland Mall. The man who sold the ring for $144 has been arrested, and the ring, which Moore won last year in London as a member of the U.S. Olympic team, will be returned. Once he realized what the ring is, he notified police, who arrested 19-year old Jamaal Dontray Taylor of Marietta on December 14th. He said the ring will be returned to the owner. Moore was a star at Gwinnett County's Collins Hill High School, leading the team to three straight state championships before enrolling at Tennessee. While Moore was a member of the team, the Lady Vols posted a record of 150-4.

How's this for appreciation. Brooklyn Nets head coach Avery Johnson was named Coach of the Month in the NBA in both October and November. But he was fired yesterday after his team lost for the tenth time in 13 December games. Reports from the Nets' camp say that assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo will handle the team on an interim basis. After the fast start, expectations in Brooklyn were elevated, and although the Nets are still at .500, the recent slump brought on a perhaps hasty firing of Johnson, who is in the final year of his 3-year $12 million contract. Rumors are already flying that the Nets could go after the retired Phil Jackson.
